What kinds of essays do you accept?

Essays in history, philosophy, and policy. Within those fields, we are open: argumentative essays, analytical pieces, close readings of a thinker or text, responses to a current debate, or explorations of a historical event. We have no preferred length, style, or conclusion.

Is there a word limit?

We do not impose a strict limit. Most published essays fall between 800 and 3,000 words, but a shorter piece that says exactly what it needs to is more valuable than a longer one that does not. Write to the length your argument requires.

Can I submit an essay I have already written for school?

Yes. Coursework, EPQs, supercurricular essays, and pieces written for competitions are all welcome.

How long does the review process take?

We aim to respond within one week of submission. If you have not heard from us after two weeks, you are welcome to follow up.

Why might an essay be declined?

The most common reason for declining a submission is the content we judge to be harmful or offensive, it will be send back to you and you can re-submit the same essay after editing it.

Can I edit my essay after it has been published?

Once an essay is published, the text is fixed, make sure to read it carefully before submitting.

How do I create an account?

You can register on the website using your email address and a password. Once registered, you can build a profile, submit essays, and view your published work in one place.

Is my personal information safe?

We take account security seriously. Passwords are stored securely, and we do not share personal details with third parties. You can edit or delete your profile information at any time.

Can I write under a pseudonym?

We ask that essays be published under your real name, as part of taking your own writing seriously means standing behind it.
